Interactive Communication

The Interactive Communications component of ISO 22000 focuses on the need to communicate with all parties that come in contact with food and encompasses both upstream and downstream processes.  Such communications play an essential role in identifying hazards and controls for food safety.

It is important to recognize an organization’s role and position in a food chain.  Once the role and position has been established, a focus can then be placed on “effective interactive communications” within the food chain.  The goal of this special focus is to provide safe food products to consumers.

ISO 22000

System Management

This ISO suggests that the most effective food safety systems are operated within the framework of a structured management system.  Such a system should be established and updated to provide maximum benefit to all stake holders.  It is important to note that the ISO 22000 standard is aligned with ISO 9001 which acts to enhance and align the two standards.

This ISO standard can also be applied independently of additional management systems.


Prerequisite Programs

Prerequisite programs play an important role in food safety standards and food safety audits.  These programs should cover basic conditions and activities which help to maintain a hygienic environment in all levels of the food chain including production, handling, and provisioning.


HACCP principles

ISO 22000 assimilates the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) system and process which was developed by the Codex Alimentarius Commission. As a function of audit requirements, ISO 22000 effectively combines HACCP with Prerequisite programs.
